How Do I Freeze My Credit Report?

For a variety of reasons, you might decide that you need to implement a freeze on your credit report. Fear of identity theft is one of those reasons. At this point, you know what you need to do, but you find yourself saying, “How do I freeze my credit report?”

Contacting The Appropriate Agencies

When it comes down to freezing your credit reports it’s important to know that you will have to contact each credit bureau individually. This means that you will have to contact Experian, TransUnion and Equifax to discuss the process of securing your credit report. If you are living outside of the United States, you must contact the credit reporting agencies for your country. Why should you freeze all three of them? Well, someone who wants to steal your identity could fly under the radar if every one of your credit reports is not frozen. Once you have contacted them to say, “How do I freeze my credit report?” you will have to follow their specific requirements.

What to Send in

Each agency is going to have different requirements when it comes to freezing your credit report. For example, some of the items you may have to send to them include:

  • Certified letters
  • Police reports if applicable
  • Personal identifying details
  • Utility bills
  • Payment for the freeze

Some other requirements might vary by state. Be sure that all of the information is accurate and that everything is included in the bundle. Failure to do so could mean a serious delay on the credit report freeze.

What to Remember

Hopefully, you will have your credit report frozen soon, and you can investigate any troublesome issues. Remember, while your credit report is frozen, you can not take out a car loan or apply for a new credit card. A freeze means that no one is able to look at the document.

Before you go to get a car loan or apply for a new credit, you must take the freeze off of your report. When you are finding out the specific requirements for each agency, ask how the report has the freeze removed as well.
